What is an Uncomplicated UTI?
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection in any part of the urinary system, but most commonly occurs in the bladder and urethra. UTIs are more frequent in women due to their shorter urethra, which allows bacteria to reach the bladder more easily. An uncomplicated UTI typically affects the lower urinary tract and can cause discomfort but is usually easily treated with antibiotics.

Main Symptoms of Uncomplicated UTIs
The symptoms of an uncomplicated UTI can include:
-
A burning sensation when peeing
-
A frequent or intense urge to pee, even if little comes out
-
Cloudy, dark, or strong-smelling urine
-
Pain or pressure in your lower abdomen
-
Mild fever or feeling generally unwell
If these symptoms persist for more than a few days or worsen, it’s important to seek treatment.

Available Treatments for Uncomplicated UTIs Through the Pharmacy First Service
During your consultation at Wymeswold Pharmacy, a pharmacist will assess your symptoms and may offer the following treatments:
-
Antibiotics
You may be prescribed a short course of antibiotics to clear the infection. It’s important to take the full course, even if your symptoms start to improve early. -
Pain Relief
Over-the-counter pain relievers like paracetamol or ibuprofen may be recommended to alleviate discomfort.
Note: If a prescription medicine is issued, the standard NHS prescription charge applies unless you qualify for free prescriptions.

How to Prevent Future UTIs
To help prevent UTIs from recurring:
-
Do: Drink plenty of fluids, pee soon after sex, and wipe from front to back after going to the toilet.
-
Don’t: Hold your pee in for long periods or use scented products around your genital area, as they can irritate the urinary tract.
