What is Impetigo?

Impetigo is a bacterial skin infection that primarily affects young children but can occur at any age. It usually starts with red sores or blisters that quickly burst, leaving crusty, golden-brown patches. While impetigo is not usually serious, it is highly contagious and can spread quickly through close contact or shared items like towels and bedding. Treatment is recommended to speed up recovery and reduce the spread of the infection.

Main Symptoms of Impetigo

Symptoms of impetigo include:

  • Red sores or blisters, often around the nose, mouth, and hands

  • Golden-brown crusts that form after the blisters burst

  • Itchiness, which can sometimes be painful

If untreated, impetigo typically clears up within 2-3 weeks. However, treatment can help reduce the duration to 7-10 days and lower the risk of spreading the infection to others.

Available Treatments for Impetigo Through the Pharmacy First Service

During your consultation at Wymeswold Pharmacy, a pharmacist will assess your symptoms and may offer the following treatments:

  • Hydrogen Peroxide Cream
This can be prescribed if the infection is limited to a small area of the skin.

  • Antibiotic Cream or Tablets
Antibiotic creams may be recommended for more widespread infections, and oral antibiotics might be prescribed for severe cases, such as bullous impetigo.

Note: If a prescription medicine is issued, the standard NHS prescription charge applies unless you qualify for free prescriptions.

How to Stop Impetigo From Spreading

To prevent impetigo from spreading to other parts of your body or to others:

  • Do:

    • Wash affected areas with soap and water and dry thoroughly.

    • Wash hands frequently, particularly after touching infected areas.

    • Wash flannels, towels, sheets, and pillowcases at a high temperature.

    • Keep sores covered with gauze or loose clothing.

  • Don’t:

    • Avoid touching or scratching the sores to prevent spreading the infection and causing scarring.

    • Stay away from work, school, or nursery until 48 hours after starting treatment or until the sores have dried out.
