What is Earache?

Earache is a common condition, particularly in young children. It can be caused by infections, such as a middle ear infection (otitis media), or external factors like a buildup of earwax, damage to the ear, or even throat infections. Most cases of earache improve on their own within a few days, but treatment may be needed if the symptoms persist or worsen.

Main Symptoms of Earache

Symptoms of earache can vary but may include:

  • Pain in the ear that can be sharp, dull, or burning

  • Hearing loss or muffled hearing

  • Fluid discharge from the ear (in cases of infection)

  • Fever and general unwell feeling (particularly in children)

  • In young children: pulling or rubbing the ear, irritability, and loss of appetite

If symptoms persist for more than three days or worsen, seeking treatment is important to prevent complications.

Available Treatments for Earache Through the Pharmacy First Service

During your consultation at Wymeswold Pharmacy, a pharmacist will assess your symptoms and may offer the following treatments:

  • Pain Relief
Over-the-counter pain relievers like paracetamol or ibuprofen may be recommended to reduce pain and fever.

  • Eardrops or Warm Compresses
Depending on the cause of the earache, medicated eardrops may be suggested. Placing a warm compress on the ear can also help relieve discomfort.

  • Antibiotics
If a bacterial infection is suspected, antibiotics may be prescribed, but these are generally reserved for more severe infections.

Note: If a prescription medicine is issued, standard NHS prescription charges apply unless you qualify for free prescriptions.

If the available treatments are not suitable for your condition, our pharmacist may recommend private treatments or refer you to another healthcare provider.
