What is a Sore Throat?

A sore throat is a common condition usually caused by viral infections like the cold or flu, but can occasionally be caused by bacterial infections such as strep throat. Sore throats generally improve within a week, but treatment may be needed if symptoms persist or become severe.

Main Symptoms of Sore Throat

Symptoms of a sore throat can include:

  • Pain, especially when swallowing

  • A dry, scratchy feeling in the throat

  • Redness in the back of the throat

  • Swollen glands in the neck

  • Bad breath

  • Mild cough

Children may also develop a fever and appear less active than usual.

If your symptoms last longer than a week or worsen, it's important to seek treatment.

Available Treatments for Sore Throat Through the Pharmacy First Service

During your consultation at Wymeswold Pharmacy, our pharmacist will assess your symptoms and may offer the following treatments:

  • Pain Relief
Over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen may be recommended to relieve discomfort.

  • Medicated Lozenges or Sprays
Your pharmacist may suggest lozenges or sprays that contain local anesthetics, antiseptics, or anti-inflammatory ingredients to ease your sore throat.

  • Antibiotics
If a bacterial infection is suspected, antibiotics may be provided, but they are generally reserved for cases where bacterial infections like strep throat are diagnosed.

Note: If a prescription is issued, the standard NHS prescription charge applies unless you qualify for free prescriptions.

If the available treatments are not suitable for your condition, our pharmacist may suggest private treatments or refer you to a different healthcare provider for further care.
