What is Malaria and Why Do You Need Antimalarials?

Malaria is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes. It is found in tropical and subtropical regions, including parts of Africa, Asia, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. If left untreated, malaria can lead to severe complications. Taking antimalarial tablets before, during, and after your travel can significantly reduce your risk of infection.

Available Antimalarial Treatments at Wymeswold Pharmacy

During your consultation at Wymeswold Pharmacy, a pharmacist will assess your travel destination and personal risk to recommend the most appropriate antimalarial medication. Common options include:

  • Atovaquone/Proguanil (Malarone)
This medication is taken once daily, starting 1 to 2 days before entering a malaria-risk area and continuing for 7 days after leaving the area. It is generally well-tolerated and available in adult and pediatric formulations.

  • Doxycycline
Doxycycline is taken once daily, starting 1 to 2 days before travel and continuing for 4 weeks after leaving the risk area. This option is effective but can cause increased sensitivity to sunlight.

  • Mefloquine
This medication is taken once weekly and is usually started 2 to 3 weeks before entering a malaria-risk area. It must be continued for 4 weeks after leaving the area. Mefloquine is an effective option but may cause vivid dreams or other side effects in some individuals.

Please note: Antimalarial medications are not 100% effective, so it's important to take other precautions such as using insect repellent, sleeping under a treated mosquito net, and wearing long sleeves and trousers during the evening and night.

How to Stay Protected from Malaria

To prevent malaria:

  • Take your prescribed antimalarial medication as directed, without missing doses.

  • Use insect repellent with at least 50% DEET.

  • Sleep under mosquito nets treated with insecticide.

  • Wear protective clothing to reduce the risk of bites, especially during peak mosquito activity times in the evening and early morning.
